A Nanakuli Valley wildfire that temporarily caused residents to voluntarily evacuate and kept firefighters busy throughout the weekend was 90 percent contained today, firefighters said.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins said the fire was still about 2,500 acres in size tonight.
In the morning, Honolulu firefighters assisted state personnel from the Division of Forestry and Wildlife with checking the perimeter, especially along the Waianae side of the valley, for any hot spots. He said no homes were threatened or damaged.
During the day a DOFAW-contracted helicopter made water drops, and state personnel worked on extinguishing hot spots, Jenkins said.
A Department of Land and Natural Resources spokeswoman said a five-member crew was mopping up hot spots in the back of the valley.
The fire broke out Thursday evening, prompting the voluntary evacuation of homes around Pikaiolena Street for a couple of hours. Over the weekend about 80 firefighters assisted in battling the blaze.
