HOLLYWOOD, Md. (ABC7) – A community came together Tuesday afternoon to honor a firefighter killed while trying to save a life last week.
John Ulmschneider, 39, was shot Friday night as he and a colleague entered a Temple Hills home to check on a man whose family feared for his life.
Ulmschneider was one of two firefighters shot. The second shot, Kevin Swain, was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore where he underwent immediate surgery. He is still recovering.
Ulmschneider leaves behind his wife and daughter, in addition to other family members.
He was a 13-year-veteran of the Prince George’s County Fire Department.
Today, his wife, two-year-old daughter, and family were on the receiving line inside St. John’s Parish where he was a member of.
Parking at the church was limited, so a number of busses shuttled people from a nearby volunteer fire station, ABC7 reporter Kevin Lewis told us.
Following today’s visitation, a funeral mass will be held at St. John’s Parish on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Lewis was told Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker will both be in attendance to pay their respects to the fallen hero.
