Four Injured in Crash with Worcester Rescue

WORCESTER – Three people, including a city firefighter, were injured when a car collided with Rescue 1 on Pleasant Street as it headed for a reported building fire just after 6:30 Sunday evening.

Deputy Fire Chief Geoffrey Gardell said the rescue truck was responding to the fire call with its lights on and siren blaring when it crossed Chestnut Street.

“As it went through the green light it was broadsided by a vehicle,” Chief Gardell said. “The (fire) truck sustained major damage and the car … was totaled.”

The rescue truck was driven a short distance to clear the way for the patients to be removed from the heavily damaged vehicle, which sat in the middle of the intersection.

The driver and a passenger inside the car were taken by ambulance from the scene. Chief Gardell said one of the victims sustained a serious head injury.

The initial fire call, on Moreland Green Drive, turned out to be a problem with the smoke detector system that caused the alarms to sound, prompting a neighbor to call for help, Chief Gardell said.

The firefighter taken to the hospital was treated for minor injuries and released. Two other firefighters who were “jostled around” and declined to be taken to the hospital.
