CLEARWATER, Fla. (ABCActionNews) – Fire crews from multiple agencies battled an early morning fire at a Clearwater condominium complex.
Firefighters were called to the Inverness Condominiums at 2595 Countryside Boulevard around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. It took crews three and a half hours to control the blaze.
Flames had already spread throughout the building when firefighters started rescuing residents from balconies. They also rescued a cat.
Five adults were taken to local hospitals for smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured.
Officials say half of the building sustained heavy fire damage, and at least 50 people are displaced. The Red Cross has placed 10 people in hotels while other residents are staying with family.
Fire investigators believe the first started in a third floor unit, and are trying to determine a cause.
