Several family pets were rescued from a blaze on Wednesday that caused moderate damage to a home along Route 130 in Unity.
“No one was in the house when we got here, but there were several pets … two dogs, two guinea pigs and some lizards, all on the first floor, that had to be rescued,” said Pleasant Unity fire Chief John Bacha. “We got them out safely and firefighters and EMS administered oxygen to the two dogs once we got them outside.”
The fire broke out just after 7 a.m. at 1746 Route 130, in the village of Humphreys. The homeowner’s name was not released.
Bacha said the cause of the fire is undetermined. A state police fire marshal was at the scene Wednesday morning to investigate.
“We believe the fire began outside the residence and got up under the eaves into the second story. We knocked it down pretty fast,” Bacha said.
Bacha said the second story of the frame structure was used primarily for storage.
