Fire Kills Most Animals in Oregon Pet Store

NEWBERG, Ore. – Most of the animals have died in a fire at a Newberg pet store.

The fire department says there were hundreds of fish and a variety of animals when a crew arrived Thursday morning to see thick black smoke at the Critter Cabana.

KPTV-TV (http://bit.ly/UGRCiB) quotes owner Brittani Johnson as saying that fire crews and volunteers pulled out as many animals as they could, including Winston the tortoise.

The store had animals such as pythons and chinchillas as well as dogs and cats.

The fire department said it didn’t know what caused the blaze. It said the building was old and didn’t have sprinklers. The fire spread quickly in thick, black smoke.

About 55 firefighters converged on the store in the Yamhill County town. None were hurt.
