FDNY to Unveil Memorial Wall for Deaths Related to WTC Illnesses

The FDNY will unveil a Memorial Wall for 55 FDNY members who have died of illnesses related to their work at the World Trade Center during and after the September 11th attacks at FDNY Headquarters today, Thursday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m.  Individual names of FDNY members who have died since September 11th are listed on the Memorial Wall.

“Many FDNY members, both active and retired, who selflessly rushed in to help others and then returned to the World Trade Center site to bring back those that were lost, suffer now from many illnesses, including cancer,” said Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano. “In recent years we have seen the numbers of those affected by World Trade Center-related illness grow, and–sad to say–this will continue to be the case for years to come.”

The inscription on the Memorial Wall reads: “DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO BRAVELY SERVED THIS DEPARTMENT PROTECTING LIFE AND PROPERTY IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK IN THE RESCUE AND RECOVERY EFFORT AT MANHATTAN BOX 5-5-8087 WORLD TRADE CENTER”
