NEW YORK – The New York Post reports that the FDNY has made history by having the first transgender firefighter among its ranks.
The Post states that the male-to-female firefighter, who goes by the name Brooke, is a third generation firefighter currently assigned to an administrative post at fire department headquarters scheduling appointment for recruits. She was originally working at Engine Company 330 and Ladder Company 172 in Brooklyn.
The department has recently been under fire for a lack of diversity. According to the New York Post the FDNY is almost entirely male, with only 32 women firefighters. The FDNY has been continually fighting critics who say that numbers of blacks and females in the department are too low.
The transgender firefighter confirmed her assignment stating that she is appreciative of the support from the department and desires to have the details of her personal life remain private.
