OAK PARK, Mich. (WDIV) – A man and his two daughters, 11 and 9, were forced to jump off of a second-story balcony Thursday morning to escape a fire in their Oak Park apartment complex.
“We got dressed, and we came out to the balcony,” Kevin Davidson said after the incident. “The smoke had engulfed the house so I had to drop my two daughters over the balcony. And I jumped off the balcony. The whole thing happened in like 10 minutes.”
Local 4 obtained cell phone video of Davidson jumping from the balcony.
Authorities say Davidson and his daughters are okay, but his mother is in the hospital to be treated for non-serious smoke inhalation.
The fire was at the Rue Versailles Apartments. Ten apartments were destroyed in the fire, which started at about 2 a.m. There were no serious injuries reported in the fire.
“We waited too long to try to get out,” Davidson said. “If I would have tried to come out through the stairs, we’d have been dead. So I said let’s go out to the front porch, and I just threw them over the front porch and the people were down there to catch them. But I jumped, and I was alright, I landed in the snow so I was fine.”
Firefighters have put the fire out, but there is still no word on what started the blaze.
The Red Cross responded to the fire and is helping the residents that were affected. Click here to see a list of extreme winter weather tips from the Red Cross.
