Fairfax (VT) Firefighters Quit Over Town Hiring New Chief from Outside Department

Three Fairfax firefighters have resigned from the department after the town decided to hire a fire chief from outside the department.

They question why Battalion Chief Dave Raymond, a 10-year veteran of the department, was passed over in favor of Micah Genzlinger, training coordinator with the Vermont Fire Academy.

While not questioning Genzlinger’s credentials, they say Raymond knows the strengths and weaknesses of the individual firefighters, the geography and buildings in the town, and the locations of water supplies, which makes him the best candidate for the post.

“Dave has been doing a great job for the town for the last 10 years and they basically just let him go for no reason,” firefighter David Yergeau told NBC 5.

The chairman of the town’s select board said the hiring decision was made in consultation with an area fire chief.
