Witnesses at the scene of the early Monday fire said the family members couldn’t escape via the stairs, so blankets or sheets were stretched out for them to jump onto. The woman and some of the children were injured while jumping.

They were taken to area hospitals for treatment. EMS crews at the scene described them as being in stable condition.

Others also were rescued from the building.

Authorities say the fire is believed to have started in a vacant apartment unit in the building before spreading.
