DETROIT (WDIV) – Fire at 1214 Griwold Street in Detroit A fire broke out Monday evening at an apartment building at 1214 Griswold Street in downtown Detroit.
Detroit firefighters were battling flames which started on the 6th floor of the Griswold Apartments, which is a 12-story building. Only one apartment was impacted, the fire chief said.
“The halls were full of smoke, just full of smoke,” said resident James Lewis.
“I heard the fire alarms go off and all I did was pack my dog and got out of there,” said resident Ricardo Arredondo.
“Some of them were crawling, some of them were walking. We thought were going to get burned up up there,” said Lewis.
At the first sight of danger, one resident thought of those who couldn’t get out on their own.
“That’s what were supposed to do. I have a mother. I wouldn’t want anyone to leave my mother in a burning building, said resident Karen Clark.
Detroit EMS also were at the fire. One man was treated for burns and others were treated for smoke inhalation. The entire building was evacuated by the Detroit Fire Department.
Firefighters were able to stop the flames.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
