WASHINGTON (MyFoxDC) – A 14-year-old boy’s hand got stuck in an escalator at the Smithsonian Metro station Tuesday evening.
It took about 40 minutes for fire and rescue personnel to free the teen from the escalator, who had four of his fingers trapped.
Authorities say at around 8 p.m., the teen, who is a tourist from Canada, was riding down the escalator when one of his flip-flops got caught in the steps at the bottom of the escalator. He tried to reach down to retrieve it, but ended up getting his fingers caught.
Metro spokesperson Dan Stessel says the teen was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Stessel says the escalator at the station will be out of service pending an investigation, but there are two other working escalators at the station.
Metro is reminding riders that rubber-soled footwear can actually sink into the escalator step as you are riding it and advise taking extra care to step over the comb plate getting on and off the escalator.
