WASHINGTON (WJLA) – A firefighter who was injured in a two-alarm fire in northwest D.C. early Wednesday morning has died.
Lt. Kevin McRae, 44, died at a local hospital following the fire, according to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.
After the fire was extinguished, McRae exited the building with his crew and suddenly collapsed at the scene, Bowser said during a news conference. CPR was performed at the scene before he was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

McRae, a 24-year veteran of the department, was described as “dedicated to his family at home and at work.” He is survived by his wife and three children.
Sources tell ABC 7 that McRae was the cousin of James McRae, who was the last D.C. firefighter to die in the line of duty back in 2007.
Another firefighter who was sustained non-life threatening injuries in the blaze has been treated and released from the hospital. Two residents of the building who were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries have also been released.
The fire started on the 9th floor of an apartment building located in the 1700 block of 7th St. NW close to Mount Vernon.
D.C. Fire said the fire was extinguished around 8:45 a.m.
The 1700 block of 7th Street and 6th Street NW near Kennedy Red Center were temporarily closed to traffic from M to P Streets.
