(BOOTHWYN, PA) Wildland Firefighters have a new weapon at their disposal in their struggle against the wrath of nature: the Kestrel 3000 Pocket Weather Meter.
The Kestrel 3000 is a handheld, digital instrument that measures relative humidity, heat stress index, dew point temperature, wind chill, wind speed and temperature. NK is known for its durable, innovative products, and the Kestrel 3000 is no exception. The Kestrel 3000 has three features of particular interest to fire fighters and weather experts:
- A capacitive humidity sensor for measuring humidity with an accuracy of +/- 3 percent (within a range of 5-95 percent relative humidity)
- A precision quick-response thermistor for accurate temperature readings within +/- 1 degree
- A light but strong, replaceable impeller for measuring wind speed with an accuracy of three percent or better
A Valuable Instrument in the Line of Fire
When battling wildfires, it’s important that fire fighters be armed with the most accurate, site-specific information. That’s where the Kestrel 3000 comes in. “Fire fighters usually receive pertinent fire information from their dispatch center, which is often several miles away from the actual blaze,” said Frank Neibauer, Assistant Training and Safety Officer at the Township Fire Department in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. “The Kestrel 3000 is useful in this case because it can easily be transported to the location for more site-specific decisions with regards to wind speed, temperature and relative humidity.”
The Kestrel 3000 is particularly useful in fighting fires during the summer months when humidity levels are a concern. Humidity can impact the outcome of a fire in two ways. First, it plays an important part in determining which chemicals will be most effective on the blaze. Second, high humidity combined with the heat of the blaze can put fire fighters under a lot of stress. These stress levels can be determined by using the National Weather Service’s heat index, a measure of how hot it feels when the relative humidity is combined with the actual air temperature. The Kestrel 3000 provides that information by simply slipping off the protective case, holding it up, and reading the digital display.
The Kestrel 3000 can be used by anyone who works or plays outdoors and needs an accurate and reliable pocket weather meter. It’s waterproof to one meter and floats, and comes with a neck lanyard and a protective hard cover. The Kestrel 3000 operates on a single common watch battery that runs approximately 300 hours, and it is fully guaranteed for two years.
Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters feature a full line of rugged environmental monitoring devices that can measure, log and wirelessly transmit a range of weather data. Every Kestrel Pocket Weather Meter is backed by a five year warranty and is designed, developed, built, tested and supported here in the USA. Nielsen-Kellerman’s Kestrel Weather division has been researching, developing and manufacturing technically advanced portable weather instruments for more than twelve years and owns multiple patents on their unique features. Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters are employed by thousands of users in hundreds of different activities around the world.
