Collapse and Mayday at Ontario Blaze

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – A warehouse fire has injured four firefighters, one critically, in Mississauga, Ontario, early this morning.

CBC News/Toronto reports that the four were injured after a wall collapse and explosion in an industrial storage warehouse. The three-alarm blaze occurred at 2797 Thamesgate Drive in Malton and briefly trapped the firefighters.

Mississauga Deputy Fire Chief Greg Laing told CBC that the injured firefighters were at the door when the explosion occurred. Mississauga Fire Fighters Association president Mark Train said that the critically injured firefighter was transferred to a Toronto hospital. The three other injured firefighters are reported to be in stable condition.

One the collapse occurred a mayday went out for the injured firefighters. Crews then fought the blaze from the exterior. Witnesses told CBC that small explosions could be heard during the fire.

Local police state that the structure is a storage warehouse for aerosol cans of bug spray and butane lighters. There is no immediate concern about the toxicity of the smoke, but residents nearby have been advised to avoid the area. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment is on the scene and will be monitoring the area.
