Canadian Student Firefighter Dies in Training Exercise

HANOVER, Ontario — An investigation is underway in the death of a student firefighter during an ice and water rescue training exercise in Hanover.

The Canadian Press reports that Adam Brunt, a 30-year old student enrolled in the Durham College firefighting program died on February 9, 2015 after becoming trapped under the ice while in the Saugeen River.

Police state that Brunt became caught in a strong current and was kept submerged for approximately 15 minutes before being rescued.

The training exercise was being conducted by a private company and the incident is still under investigation.

An autopsy is expected.
