LONDON (AP) – Emergency officials say more than 100 firefighters have contained a blaze involving thousands of tons of wood pellets at a British power station.
Essex Fire and Rescue Service says the fire broke out Monday morning in a wood pellet hopper at the Tilbury Power Station, east of London.
It took fire crews several hours to contain the blaze, involving 4,000 to 6,000 tons of pellets, on an upper level of the plant.
By Monday afternoon, the service said “the fire is under control and steady progress is being made.”
There were no reports of injuries. Owner RWE npower said all staff had been accounted for.
The former coal-fired power station has been converted to generate power from biomass – wood pellets made from sawdust and sawmill waste.
The plant is owned by Germany’s RWE AG.
