BOULDER, Colo. (AP) – The Boulder Fire Department is honoring two firefighters killed during a training accident 30 years ago that prompted training changes.
The ceremony on Thursday is being held to honor 30-year-old William Duran of Broomfield and 21-year-old Scott Smith of Longmont, who died in the accident.
The two men were inside an abandoned garage in north Boulder that was being used for a live-fire training exercise. The fire burned out of control, and the two men lost their lives.
According to the Boulder Daily Camera (http://bit.ly/y2Hpe4 ), an investigation found that there were flammable tiles in the building.
As a result, live-fire exercises are only done at the Fire Training Center near the Boulder Reservoir. Abandoned buildings are only used to practice cutting ventilation holes or doing forced entry.
