BOISE, Idaho — Boise fire chief Dennis Doan was placed on administrative leave earlier this week, a move that surprised some in the fire department.
That move, now called a suspension or “personnel matter” according to Mayor Lauren McLean’s office, is being met by a response from the fire chief himself according to KTVB7.
Fire Chief Dennis Doan sent an email to the city council giving his side of the matter.
On the steps of City Hall Doan held a press conference about his plan to retire in May and remain on paid leave.
The city had rejected that plan and chose to fire Doan.
The city council is expected to vote on the request to fire the chief on Friday.
In Doan’s email to the council he acknowledged that Mayor McLean wanted him to leave given his relationship with former mayor Dave Bieter.
Doan went on to say that in meetings with the mayor and staff he was told to sign an agreement and that if he did not sign he would face firing. Doan was also placed on leave and given time to consider this agreement offer.
The agreement according to Doan was to retire immediately and accept $50,000 in severance pay. Doan said he could not retire immediately and asked for additional time to line up his health care.
According to Doan, that is when he was told the mayor would fire him.
