The Baltimore Fire Department has created the position of battalion technician to assist with incident command at complex fires.
The new position is designed to address one of the problems that cropped up in the January fire that killed three firefighters.
That fire on South Stricker Street cost three firefighter’s lives when the structure collapsed.
As the fire scene grew in complexity, with multiple firefighters trapped in the fire building, the incident commander struggled to manage all the responsibilities, including accounting for personnel, monitoring rescue activities, and managing the fire suppression activities.
The full report on the fire is available here.

Thanks to BCFD Admin for following the recommendation from the Stricker Report. Here is a new Battalion Technician in action. It’s staffed by a member who assists the Battalion Chief with incident management & accountability. It also complies with @NFPA & makes our scenes safer. pic.twitter.com/lbqDmaVlmh
