Arrest in Fire that Led to W.Va. Firefighter’s Death

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – Police have charged an Alum Creek man with setting fire that led to a firefighter’s fatal fall from a bridge.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department says 37-year-old Charles “Darren” Roberts was arrested Wednesday night. Roberts is charged with third-degree arson. He’s being held at the South Central Regional Jail on $250,000 bond.

Davis Creek-Ruthdale volunteer firefighter Joey King was killed Sunday while responding to the fire in the Alum Creek area. Police say the 61-year-old King was looking over the Steven Wayne Memorial Bridge trying to spot the fire when he fell off and down an embankment.
