Glens Falls (NY) Shoots Down Pension for Firefighter Suffering Early-Onset Alzheimer’s

Glens Falls Fire Lieutenant Doug Holl, in his mid-50s, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s over a year ago.

With 18 years service, Holl needed to serve 20 years to secure his full pension. Thirty-seven of his fellow firefighters approached the city government with an offer. They would surrender about 3,000 hours of accrued paid time off to donate to Holl so that he would qualify for his pension, WNYT reports.

After over a year of negotiations, City Hall delivered its final decision this week: no deal. The ruling leaves the Holls facing significant financial uncertainty, as their pension payout will now be reduced from approximately 50% of Holl’s average salary to just 29%

The Glens Falls Mayor’s Office declined comment for the story, WNYT reports.
