If we aren’t critical about ourselves, no one will be until there’s a loss of civilian lives, a catastrophic fire, or even a line-of-duty death.

On Friday, July 1, 1988, as firefighters from the Hackensack (N.J.) Fire Department prepared for the holiday weekend, calls began pouring in reporting flames and smoke coming from the roof of the Hackensack Ford Dealership. The entire Hackensack Fire Department—all 100 firefighters—responded to the fire. After approximately 1 hour of operations, five of them had lost their lives.
