Oregon Firefighter Fatally Shot

CAVE JUNCTION, Oregon – KDRV reports that a volunteer firefighter was found fatally shot at his home on Thursday morning.

Josephine County Sherriff’s Office deputies responded to a call for a shooting victim in the 900 block of Caves Highway at approximately 10:20 a.m.

Deputies found a deceased man at the rear door of a residence.

At approximately 11:45 a.m. authorities stopped a suspect in a stolen vehicle outside of Crescent City, California. One person was taken into custody.

The investigation into the firefighter’s death is being led by the Oregon State Police.

Illinois Valley Fire District Fire Chief John Holmes confirmed that the victim was a volunteer firefighter with the department.

Chief Holmes also told KDRV that he believes the firefighter had been shot at his home as he was getting ready to respond to a call.

Holmes told KOBI that the firefighter was responding to a call but that he did not have many details on what happened.

A procession took the body of the firefighter from Cave Junction to the Oregon State Police crime lab in Central Point.

The identity of the firefighter was not released.
