EMMITSBURG, Maryland – A ceremony recognizing the nation’s firefighters who died in the line of duty prior to the establishment of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in 1981 was held on Saturday on the memorial grounds in Emmitsburg.
National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Chairman Chief Dennis Compton opened the ceremony which highlighted a Pre-1981 Section of Walk of Honor. Much like the existing walkway on the memorial grounds, this special area is designed for the remembrance of earlier firefighter line of duty deaths.
The new section connects the memorial centerpiece; the stone monument, eternal flame and circling name plaques with the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Chapel.
The Foundation placed a brick for each of the fifty states in the new section and personalized bricks can be purchased by family members or departments.
Those who wish to purchase a brick in honor of a firefighter, who died in the line of duty prior to 1981, or for any other year, can make their purchase online. For those to be placed in the Pre-1981 section, make sure to check the Pre-1981 LODD Box when ordering.
Memorial bricks will be added to this section after the June dedication ceremony. Learn how you or your department can place a memorial brick in the Walk of Honor.
