About Me:
I started in March of 1988 with the Buffalo Volunteer Department and moved my way up through the ranks to be the Assistant Chief for 2 years. I was also their Vice President on the Board of Directors. After getting a full time job with the Gaffney City Fire Department, my wife talked me into moving to Cowpens (in Spartanburg County) to be closer to her family and our church there. While serving with the City of Gaffney, our employee benefits started to shrink away, so I started looking for employment elsewhere. Upon application with the big city in "Spartanburg" County (a much bigger and busier fire department), I was hired at a wage comparable to what I was making after six years and a promotion at Gaffney. I am very excited about my new career in Spartanburg County but will miss all those I have left behind at Gaffney and Buffalo.
Side Jobs or Other Organizations:
Work part time on days off at Cowpens Fire Department for $8.50 an hour.
Personal Site/Profile:
http://www.cowpensfire.com
Top Issues Facing Responders:
BETTER PAY AND BENEFITS FOR PAID FIRE FIGHTERS, AND BETTER ON SCENE ACCOUNTABILITY.
I Love Being in Fire/EMS Because:
The look on a childs face when I show up to help someone.

Cowpens Fire Department

We are always looking for inexpensive training options. There are to many expensive companies out there like Rescue 3 ($300 a person) that are too expensive. So, if anyone knows of a little more financially flexible Rescue training company that will work with a department on expenses, please let me know.

Big Fires

Today I am trying to rest after a very busy day at the Big City. During our twenty four hour shift we ran two working structure fires with a whole lot of fire in both. The first fire was a two story apartment building that was called in as that but with possible victims trapped. Upon our arrival, Rescue 1 personnel entered first and started a search. Engine 1 and Engine 3 teamed up to attack the fire that started in the kitchen and spread to a small dining area and the living room before our en… Continue

God is good!

All is well in SC and winter is going rather mild. I hope all of you can say the same thing that I can: God is good. All the time, when I am down, when I am up, when I am asleep, and awake; God is good.

Last day of September

I am looking forward to riding backwards again! Leaving Gaffney City FD and going to Spartanburg County for better pay and benefits. I start October 12, 2007. ( I am not supposed to mention the City where I work so I will just say that I work in a large city in Spartanburg County)

Fire Expo in Atlanta

I have been in the fire service almost 20 years and I have never been to something so big.

I bet you could fit 6 football fields inside the expo center there in Atlanta and all of that area was filled with fire fighting equipment and information for the fire and ems service.

I would recommend that everyone try to go to the IAFC- Expo at least once in a life time. You should know that it was totally free if you signed up in advance and it was well worth it.

Hey cuz, yeah I dunno when i'll be coming to SFD...I may be moving back home if the money is right, I was told they are hiring this summer and starting pay is in the low 30s so we will see. As for the ISO, we haven't gotten results back...rumor was ISO said we may be able to keep a 4, but worst case we drop to a 5. Guess we will see...but I'll definately let you know when I hear something...looks like you have been burning the piss out of some stuff over there...wish we were here, its been kind of slow. Anyways brother, stay safe and keep in touch...
