Why I Joined the Fire/EMS:

I started out in the Northport Fire Department where I received four years of basic training as a Junior Firefighter. We did everything the firefighters did except go interior during the initial stages of the fire. I than moved upstate new york where I joined the Richmondville Fire Department and rescue squad where I served 11 years, and made Lieutenant in the fire dept and Lieutenant and Captain in the ambulance. Top Issues Facing Responders:
I will probably be stoned to death for saying this but I feel passionately about it and maybe it will generate some support for this issue; I feel that Firefighter I & II should be State License's and need to be re-certified every 3-5 years like the NYS EMT license's. Not enough people refresh their training and its scary...VERY scary, to see guys who took "Essentials" 20+ years ago but have not attended any further or refresher training and feel they do not need to. THATS one of the top issues I feel in todays fire service.
Lack of training standards, volunteers with not enough time to train properly that get doctored through the system and end up being Chief at the age of 25. Lost Traditions, lack of respect of the elders and officers, Manpower issues, and equipment issues.
I Love Being in Fire/EMS Because:
The personal satisfaction from using 100's of hours of training to work as a group and help people. The Comraderie that you can still find in some departments, the brotherhood, being part of something that gives back to the community.

Lets Re-think the Future of Fire Training

Friends, Brothers Sisters, and everyone interested in keeping knowledge up to date. I have a dream, and that dream is to have a Volunteer Fire Service that holds training and education on a pedestal and worships it daily. A fire service that understands the importance of continuing education and practicing BASIC skills on an annual schedule. A fire service that is no longer concerned with ego and image and is MORE concerned with the service it provides to its residents...Isn't that what we are h… Continue

Yes, that's the same training. Have you heard much or know much about the training?

Also, what do you know about the advanced tech training. I'm assuming it requires the Cobra training first. I attended the training in 2003 and put together a website to share the experience with others. Here it is...

http://www.silcom.com/~pordecon/2003_cobra3.htm

If you were not familiar with the specifics of the training, you are now... Hope you find this helpful. Give me a shout anytime if I can be of assistance. Mike

PS: What I did not like in the least was the part when they drew bloods...

I hate needles... and was a paramedic for 15 years...

Hi Jeff, I've been learning the site for the past three months as I have been recovering from knee surgery. Blew out my right one on a wildland fire a couple of months back. Had the surgery and now life is starting to finally get back to normal for me. This has given me the time to spend getting to know a lot of folks around the world. Something that you may also find really rewarding. This week I started a new group called Hazmat WMD Responders. Please check out the site for some cool stuff that I've been collecting for over 25 years since first getting involved with hazmat. I think you might find some of the shared information really useful. If it's old news, sure could use some input, specially with providing AHLS for hazmat team members that accidentally get exposed... Stay safe! Mike from Santa Barbara, CA, USA
