- Why I Joined the Fire/EMS:
- Well, I was a florist...lol and I wanted to do something different. I decided to go to EMT school. At that time in my city, there were no private ambulance services, thank God! So, my only option was the FD. Our dept has run ambulances since the 70's. I think we were the first dept. in Louisiana to run an ambulance service within our dept. It's a fully paid fire dept. of about 50. I wasn't sure about being a FF so I did a little volunteering with a vol. dept. just to see if I could even do it or liked it at all. I did so I applied for the job and almost 18 months later I got a job as an entry level FF/EMT in a dept. that had no women. I'm now a Captain/EMT-I and serve as secretary of our union and as the fire dept. representative on our city's civil service board. The rest is history.
