This is me...

I'm a family man - two son's, one daughter-in-law and two grandaughters. Work was killing me quickly, and not with love, so I gave it all away and retired to be a full-time volunteer firefighter.

What have I done with my life? Been in the Army. Been a manager, IT Analyst/Prog. martial arts instructor. As a firefighter? My first bushfire was when I was 20, a crown fire, nice introduction! Volunteer in the Country Fire Authority, Victoria. Australia. Structure/Wildfire qualified, Hazmat, Level 3 1st Aid, driver, Trainer/Assessor, and lot's of bits and pieces.

We have a manageable number of jobs for a volunteer brigade - around 300 a year.

I'm in the middle of that photo on the left. 35C, very little shade, acid spill in a water treatment plant (which is why the chemical splashsuit), the spill was out in the sun. Of course. And I was there for 5 hours. Of course. But that's what they pay us for isn't it? Oh wait - I don't get paid do I? Never mind, it keeps us busy..

My photos

I've just added a few more photos. Please feel welcome to look at them individually and leave comments - I like to hear from people! I don't post ( or even keep!) all the photos I take, I keep only those that I think are of at least reasonable quality. Digital is nice and cheap of course, but back in the days of film I used to be very happy if I could get two out of a roll of 35+ that were worth keeping!

I'd had the idea of doing a running report on our incidents.

Can't be bothered! Maybe I'll just mention any of interest... I don't think I've mentioned this one, but it was interesting. Happened a couple of weeks ago now, pager mid afternoon to support our neighbours in the full career service. Stangely, it was further into their area than we normally support, would normally be one of our career Stations supporting there. As it turned out, they specifically requested us. Nice feeling from that!.. Anyway. I get to the shed and so does the only othe… Continue

What's with this holiday weekend?

Friday, five calls. Saturday, three calls. Sunday, 2 calls - so far. Ten calls inside three days is a little beyond a joke! Friday's calls I've mentioned. Saturday - 13:58 - Support call for a grass & scrub (brush fire for those non-aussies). Small fire in a patch of parkland. 16:53 - Support call to a going grass & scrub fire, could have got nasty but was rounded up. 22:54 - Support call for a house fire - they wanted our thermal imaging camera. I didn't get on a truck for any of those… Continue

Another day - 21st Mar 2008, Good Friday

Today, Good Friday, is when our specialist hospital for children, The Royal Children's Hospital, holds its yearly appeal. One aspect of this appeal is that emergency workers all over the State get involved in collecting donations from motorists (yes, can rattlers!). And that's what happened today. 0800 meet at the Station to be allocated to an intersection and a truck. At work by 0820, good intersection with a railway crossing; and I was with the pumper. 0910 - paged to an alarm operating at a… Continue

Now for some about the Fire Rescue Service (FRS) of which I'm a member. The Country Fire Authority …

Now for some about the Fire Rescue Service (FRS) of which I'm a member. The Country Fire Authority (CFA) of Victoria is the organisation responsible for fire and other emergencies for most of the State. We only have one really large city, Melbourne. The FRS for the CBD and about 50% of the suburbs is the all career Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board - like long names, don't we? So we call it the MFB. The CFA covers the rest of the suburbs plus all the provincial cities, towns… Continue

Hi Tony
Thanks for the comments on Mikes blog the other day. Not quite sure what to make of this fire my face thing but it's good to get some feed back I tried to make contact with oversea's vols just like us the other month but no responce yet. Do you get much value out of the groups on this web forum? a bit differant from our groups at home all work no play. Your photo's look familliar but I suppose there's not many CFA vols that haven't crossed path's in the last five years.
all the best .

Tony,
Thanks for the comments on the photos that I uploaded. You have some nice ones yourself I must say. How is everything in Australia. I just came back from a trip to Alaska and I might be going to Hawaii sometime soon. Nice to meet you and Stay Safe

Hey Tony,

What's up? I've been cruising along alright....trying to get released from the department to function as an EMT-I (ALS cert, between EMT-basic and paramedic)..the state certified me but my department requires more ride time and evaluations. Other than that working on becoming a driver and the department program for that...
in the meantime...lol..watching the olympics and trying wakeboarding. Soccer starts up in a few weeks so better get in-shape for that....

What's been going on with you lately?

Hi Tony...I did go to Australias site and post a similar question. I had one guy tell me he knew of a few that had been here in April but I haven't heard back from him. Although I will always support y'all - I think I've given up my search.
Stay Safe :o)

You're absolutely right! I've had more positive experiences as a firefighter than as an MP. Stay safe!

I wish I could say that I was busy, but I'm still off duty for one more month, recovering from knee surgery. I'm really looking forward to getting out of the house and back to the fire station. My three teenage daughters, wife and poodle are driving me crazy. It's such a chick house that I live in. I'm even watching Hannah Montana now with my youngest. I'm starting to go bonkers... You know what I'd rather be doing? Hope your having more fun than me! Stay safe my aussie brother. Mike from Santa Barbara
