How can i get my members to wear their gear?

I am an assistant chief from a small volunteer fire department and i have a problem that i dont know how to fix. I and my safety officer constantly preach about wearing full appropriate gear at each call and still I have members including high ranking officers that show up with no or some of their gear on. If you have any advice or experience in this situation your reply would be greatly appreciated i need any help i can get i want my members to be able to go home to their families and be able to respond to the next call.

We need more officers to make a firm stand like that. At the fire house its okay to be flexable and have fun but on the fire ground Firefighter safety is paramount!
P. S. The volunteer may leave but he will leave alive and in one piece.
Exactly I rather see them get pissed & leave, rather then them leaving in an ambulance because they got hurt or killed.
tell them they either wear there gear or they are suspended thats whats our chief had to do to a couple of members at our dept
Heck, next time you get a fire and you find some members not wearing gear just turn the hoseline on them. It might take a couple of times doing this but it works wonders. Eventually they will get the message. Shoot, use a 2 1/2 on the stubborn ones.
I think I detect a joke there, but I'm not sure. A close range shot with a 2 1/2 could potentially kill a person......even a 1 3/4 shot aint good......not to mention hosing your members down at a fire scene in front of the public eye makes you look like a bunch of bumbling knuckle heads.....talk about a black eye for the fire department.......
Indeed, I was being facetious. You are absolutely correct that this would be an unacceptable practice and would certainly not be conducive to good public relations. On the other hand, a bunch of firefighters working without the proper equipment at a fire scene is, none the less, a black eye.

Maybe just use a taser instead of a shot with an 1 3/4?;)
LOL, yeah, a taser would be good....I have found in the past that if you arent clear about a joke, some people have no common sense and try things like hosing down members with 2 1/2 at a fire scene because someone said it was ok. I feel better now knowing you arent one of them.....I'm laughin'......
I've seen first hand @ getting hit with a hose can do. My brother got hit in the eye during a battle of the barrel competion. He was getting beat & the other team members couldn't get the hose back fast enough, he tripped & sprayed himself right in his eye. NOT a pretty sight.
It's all fun 'n games until someone gets squirted in the eye.....
First you need to get all the officers to ware the right gear. I am also from a small volunteer fire dept. I had guys on calls even training that refuse to ware their gear. I am not an officer but I have taken a lot of Safety officer classes and life safety classes and I go to some one and remind them that they are setting the examples for the new guys if it is a long time fire fighter and I remind them that they need to go home safe that is why this gear has been made. I have also gone up and fixed there straps on there helmets if they are not one right and say your love one needs you and It actully has started to help. You can see a change it takes a long time. and when the New guys come in I let them know why that is an imporant part of there gear. I have found that it dose take time and They called me on it reciently and I was glad they did. Also with Every one Goes Home Has some great poster to remind us were are not invinisable. WE are human. Godd luck. Keep up on trying it will make a differance at some point.
well asst. chief due they not want go home after the call or due they want to go home in a box whear there familys sees them one last time or so bad that they cant see them at all and what due you want to see i know what you like to see so if they cant due the job right then tell them to hit the road come back when they can fallow the rules of the game and respect your wishes if not then get new people in that will and take the monkey off your back i have over 20yrs. and i whear all my stuff because i want to go home my family and girls at the end of my shift besides if i dont i have this small but mean who would kick my butt if not and he wouldnt think twice about it so no gear no play stay home dont be a part of the problem .
