I am a book junkie, especially when it comes to my office. I really like to have a lot of resources relating to the work that I do as a chaplain on hand. I have learned quite a bit from reading various titles on grief, trauma, traumatic stress, abuse, and fire & police families. I have learned a lot in my education but there is always room to learn more. Reading books helps me better myself as a chaplain.
Denise over at Laughing with Spoons wrote a beautiful post called I Am. She lists the… Continue

After nearly a year of researching, assessing, and discussing the importance of caring for the needs of emergency service workers who have been critically injured in the line of duty, the SHS board of directors is releasing a survey (link to survey is below) to collect more detailed and specific information on those needs. The survey will assist us in gathering resources and in developing SOGs for departments to use in the event a critical firefighter injury.

Several weeks ago I returned home after working one of the firefighter fatalities that had occurred over the 4th of July weekend. I have needed some time to regroup and to rest after this one. Over the many years that I have been running the TX Line of Duty Death Task Force, I have… Continue

Most civilians would have never known what is involved in a fire or police funeral when a public servant is killed in the line of duty until 9/11 happened. Once the funerals and memorials started for those FDNY and NYPD fallen members, images of fla… Continue
As you can see from this post I survived yet another plane ride. Hooray! Both flights were actually very good flights with hardly any turbulence. I definitely didn't feel like the wings were about to break off and I could understand what the pilot and the flight attendants were saying, so all in all it was a good flight.
I had to go teach at an honor guard sympo… Continue
Just thought I would share about a new movie coming out in the fall of 2008 called Fireproof. It's about a firefighter trying to put his marriage back together.

It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who s… Continue
I haven't had a chance to be real active on the boards lately because we just got back from China where we adopted our first daughter. It's been a whirlwind experience. I tried to visit a fire station while we were there but it's government controlled, so we weren't able to visit or t… Continue
The soul of a firefighter is a complicated thing. Of course the soul of anyone is a subject that is filled with wonder, questions, and
confusion. I think though, that the spiritual being of a firefighter,
their very soul is even more complicated because of everything they
face. The average citizen does not see or experience in their lifetime
what a firefighter does in a shift or a day or even a week.
I haven't been around in a while. Things have gotten pretty crazy busy! I am still hanging out at http://adoptionandfire.typepad.com and at www.firefighterministries.org. We have many new programs we are hoping to add for injured emergency workers.
Anyway, just wanted to apologize to those of you who I have yet to respond to. I am trying to catch up! I promise! Continue
