There was a song back in the 70s that was sung by The Brotherhood of Man entitled “United We Stand”.
The chorus went something like “For united we stand, divided we fall; and if our backs should ever be against the wall, we’ll be together; together you and I”.
Over the years, the song has been a rallying cry for several groups and done by several artists, but what is my point here?
I read a couple of recent articles that I have linked to and it got the little guy in my head to wondering why t…

Blogger’s Note: Lately, there have been several discussion topics about the C vs. V again.
Now; I am neither the conscience nor the moderator for this website, but I can tell you that those members that are using this forum to voice their displeasure over a perceived “snub” by other firefighters clearly don’t understand how to navigate the website or to do a search for this topic, for if they did, they would find reams on this topic. So, my goal is for this to be the END ALL blog on this…

As I travel around the country talking with other firefighters, a commonly recurring theme of our chat is the future of the volunteer fire service.
The conversation always comes around to the topic of today’s firefighters and the next generation of firefighters. Some “more experienced” firefighters (notice I didn’t use the term older) share that they don’t understand the “kids” coming into the fire service today.
The veterans don’t think today’s recruits share the same values as those who are…

In my last blog titled “Dig In.” I talked about the importance of story telling in the fire service and how it serves as a means of sharing experiences, traditions and values from generation to generation. In this article I try to tell a story, and in that story, I hope you can find a lesson to share for generations to come.
Almost every firefighter I meet speaks of how they always knew, from the time they were a…

I, like most of us here, received an email from the secret list (www.secretlist.com). It was discussing the brown-out situation in Boston. The following is a portion of the e-mail I received -
But it's a whole lot different now in Boston, MA.
Not surprisingly, defiant off-duty BFD Firefighters are intentionally disobeying BFD orders and voluntarily staffing 3 Boston fire companies that were closed this week as part of a new "brown out" policy aimed at reducing overtime spending.
"It's the peop…

I posted a blog on Firehouse Zen yesterday relating to
evolving and changing with emerging issues and reflected on how even if we try to ignore it, the world around us is moving forward. Failing to move on from the past is only going to keep us from surviving.
This morning I was listening to
Alan Dershowitz discussing President Obama's new supreme court nominee,…

From www.tigerschmittendorf.com:
Continental Flight 3407 crashed into a home in Clarence Center, NY around 10:20pm on Thursday-February 12, 2009 - killing 50 people and changing the lives of thousands more, including mine.
I responded in the first wave of emergency services personnel sent to help restore order to the chaos that the crash created.
Frankly, I’m not ready to write about this experience at length. Not because I'm deepl…

Specifically, volunteer firefighting!
Oh; I assume that you can still volunteer at the animal shelter, homeless shelter or the youth football league, but the days of you providing a vital volunteer service to your community as a volunteer firefighter are over, according to The Albany Times Union, N.Y. newspaper. See article:
http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=761517
It is highly suspicious that the…

I recently became the acting captain of my volunteer EMS organization in rural Pennsylvania. Being the captain I am entitled to use a RED warning light on my personal vehicle. Atop my car roof is the standard BLUE light that I also use for volunteer fire calls. Does anyone know if the RED light must also be visible for the full 360 degrees?
Where would one find the laws specific to each state that addresses the use of emergency warning light, who can use them and also their governance.
Thanks to…

Well, ok…so “Probie-ness” isn’t a word, but I added it to my Word dictionary, so according to MY word processing software…it is now. Maybe I’ll add it to Wikipedia too---dazzle them with confusion….it lets you get away with all KINDS of hijinks and lunacy. Hmmm....maybe "Probiedom" would be more apt.
Anyhoo….”Probie-ness” … When I first joined the department, I felt so stupid and clumsy and green (read some of my
“Chronicles of the FNG (irl)" posts right here on FFN to get a sense of jus…

For those of you that have kept up with my column, many of you know about the anxiety I've felt trying to manage going to the Fire Academy full-time with the antics of my teenagers, the horrible real estate market, and trying to do it all like many business women my age.
Today I did something I was really nervous about. It may seem soooo simple to some, but today I rode a motorcycle. Just like flying, I was nervous about this. Being uncoordinated, and hating rides and motion, I was afraid I woul…

UPDATED: Here in the Washington, D.C. metro area, we get word from the local media outlets about a 4-year-old firehouse video being leaked to the local news that depicts what the media calls a 'frat house' full of activity. The Kentland Volunteer Fire Department shown in the video operates under the Prince Georges County Fire Department in Maryland .
In the news video below…

A volunteer firefighter in Penrose, CO got a lesson in anatomy that he probably doesn't want to go through again. Chris Clear was helping a friend move a roto-tiller when SNAP! He said it was just like a rock hitting his face, but it didn't feel like anything went further than that. He went to his mom who said his nose was pouring with blood.
They drove to the hospital where they took an…

Here is a list of a few of the things I learned as a probie in my dept. All you new guys, these are bound to help a little. Enjoy.
Rules Every Probie in a Volunteer Dept Should Know...
You're always the first person you look out for at a scene, your fellow firemen second. (Civilians optional)
You, as a probie, by definition know shit, that is why your shield is a different color, so when an officer looks for someone to do something, you are overlooked, so in your observing role learn as much as…
