Denise M. Broesler Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...October 21, 2009 SCBA 2 Drill - Not for Rookies Last night I finally felt like I was past Rookiedom. We did SCBA Part 2 in the smokehouse. Last year I wasn't SCBA certified yet so I did the drill but didn't go through the mazes or hatches. I did it last night though. For all you guys and girls that are experienced, young, and fit, stop reading because you will think I am quite lame. For those of you brave enough to keep reading, I want to tell you some retro… Continue

Kimberly A Bownas A Basic Drill but a Good Drill

We have had very few drills this past year and what drills we have had have been the same thing time and time again. Last night we had a drill and it was to be an SCBA recertification drill. When everyone assembled at the firehouse in the upper bay we were informed that the drill was going to be a little different. Everyone was wondering what the drill was going to entail. The Lt. running the drill stated that it wasn’t going to be an SCBA recertification as everyone expected. We went over the f… Continue

Mary Ellen Shea The Continuing Chronicles of the FNG(irl): Close But No Cigar

So close, yet so far….we had a BUSY day at the department today. First, I missed a fire call. No, not an auto alarm at the high school….nope…not a basement pumpout….it was an Honest To God, Mutual Aid, Smoke Showing, Signal “Real Deal” call. And I missed it. Not a bonafide structure fire, Not a ‘cooker” , but the closest I’ve come to one. Damn that paying job anyway….. We were offered a recap of the call (chimney fire) during drill. Our chief ran down the “who-did-what's" ….and gave his viewpo… Continue

Jenni As if Firefighters Didn't Have ENOUGH Safety Issues to Worry About...

If you're a firefighter, you probably know a thing or two about asbestos. But, if you don't, you SHOULD. What you don't know, quite frankly, could kill you. What is Asbestos? Asbestos is a naturally occurring toxin that - up until the institution of asbestos usage laws by the federal government in the early eighties - was popular in the development of a number of products, including drywall, stucco, floor, ceiling and roofing tiles, attic insulation, and automobile brakes. Before the us… Continue

Denise M. Broesler Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...December 16, 2008 I had my practical last night and I am waiting to hear if I passed. Everyone was so encouraging beforehand, telling me not to overthink like I have the habit of doing. I want to make a few observations and if you're a parent you will like these. One is my son who is 11 has been extremely afraid of heights. I have a balcony in front of a window and the last time I asked him to clean the window and floor (quite a way up) he told me afterwards h… Continue

Denise M. Broesler Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Last night was our last live burn at the Academy. For the next month, we are in the classroom. We did four evolutions. I have to be honest and my confidence went down a bit. When you put everything together like we did in a rolling response, and you have people yelling and crowded in small doorways, well it's entirely realistic and your mistakes jump out at you. My first evolution was engine 2 and our six person team had to bring hoseline up to the 3rd floor. My partner stayed on the second flo… Continue

Denise M. Broesler Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Yesterday was such an exhausting day I couldn't even type this post! We had an SCBA drill yesterday. I was so glad the Academy got us ready by doing the search and rescue with the packs on. I didn't get to go through the maze but was able to do the rescue. All the practice makes you feel more comfortable with the equipment. Last night we climbed the 24 foot ladder into the window then advancing dry hose lines. What I didn't know and to those of you veteran firefighters this may seem stupid (al… Continue

Denise M. Broesler Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

I have kept my blog silent today because of George Carlin. However, today was also the first day of my Firefighter I class at the Morris County Training Academy and I wanted to tell you all about it while it was fresh in my mind. I didn't sleep well last night, so nervous that I wasn't going to wake up on time to be on time. I was so nervous that I was basically awake the whole night! I was running on time and had to drop off my son to camp on the way, pick up my SCBA and mask, grab a coffee an… Continue

EuroFirefighter SCBA - Manage your Air!

'To many firefighters, ‘air management’ still means waiting for the low-air vibration alert or alarm to sound, signaling it’s time to leave the building. This occurs when three-fourths of the air supply has been consumed. Many consider that such a procedure is acceptable during a routine room-and-contents fire in a small building. However, take a look at how many firefighters have ‘run out of air’ in residential fires and lost their lives! In larger structures, or where there are large numbers o… Continue

Jennifer Harmon I know Admin is looking at new Air Packs... But what are you gonna do??? Read On....

Firefighters report problems with breathing devices ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Twelve St. Louis jurors deliberated last month on whether a safety device worn by city firefighter Rob Morrison malfunctioned and contributed to his death at a blaze in 2002, but they never finished. The manufacturer settled with Morrison's family for between $1 million and $5 million, ending the case. Questions regarding the safety of Survivair brand equipment did not end. The company has been named in two other suits… Continue

Of course I always drive safely and utilize Due Regard. That's why I didn't just hop in front of the cars hoping that they would stop for me. It just irks me that people are either A.) THAT oblivious when operating a motor vehicle, or B.) That unc...

The incident hindered my response by a minute or so which could make all of the difference. In this instance - no, I still made the rig (it was an EMS call). However, the "What If" factor plays a key role - the other drivers passing me didn't know...

This is true. It's personally happened to me, I've heard horror stories about it, and someone I work with has even stated that she purposely does this as well. However, if it were her house on fire, or her husband and/or children that needed help,...
