COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Fire gutted a home off Two Notch Road in Columbia before the fire department got the fire under control around 4:00pm Friday.
It happened on Knightbridge Road, according to Columbia fire officials. Firefighters say no one was home when the fire started, but there was a dog in the house.
His little wet nose can breathe fresh air now, but one-year-old Teddy nearly died of smoke inhalation while stuck alone inside the smoke-filled house.
Columbia firefighter Blake Harlin sat…

Kadooment Hero! That's what residents are calling a young man who yesterday, Kadooment Day, lifted a 94-year-old woman from a burning house and took her to safety.
Shawn Howell broke down a door and brought Enid Sandiford to safety after a room in her Seclusion Road, Black Rock, St Michael home caught on fire.
He then returned to fight the blaze with the help of others who were on their way to watch the bands parade.
"I broke off the door and already the place was filled with smoke . . . . I…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...April 13, 2009
Today our fire department had a drill on rescue harnesses. See how someone can be lowered from a second story window was very interesting, especially how the safety person below could control how slow or fast the person was lowered. Although I didn't climb out of the window, I took the practical for me approach as being the backup person on the rope. I also saw equipment I never saw before. They were Figure 8 hooks.

I have become the deputy coordinator for the newly formed county rescue team and the first item to we need to establish is a set of bylaws. We sure could use some input from any brothers or sisters involved in this specialized team work on how their bylaws read. we are still in the beginning phase and could use all the help we can get. Thanks

Life After Grandview
Calamus Fire Department was located in a village of 800 inhabitants. The annual budget was $53,000 a year. Members were paid a stipend for meetings, training and fire calls. Though they responded to rescue calls, money was not paid for them. The chief was paid a premium for meetings, but earned the same as everyone else at a fire. Most years, the department would respond to 60 calls.
It was Friday evening at 1800 hours. A call has just been received from county…

Over at the Happy Medic we tried out a new feature that got a lot of attention, You Make the Call. Becasue of the popularity we're now doing it every friday, with the conclusion of each scenario on monday afternoons. Gives you the weekend to ponder.
Much like the old football game feature, I present a situation from my past and you, the visitor, tell me what you would do based on your training, experience and protocols or SOGs.
Its a great way to learn from others and get solutions for everyday…

(Anytown, USA) -- The fire service here in the USA is extremely fortunate to employ some of the bravest firefighters and most knowledgeable fire officers in the world. But firefighting is inherently a dangerous profession, and things will and do go wroong. When a firefighter loses his or her life in a burning structure it is usually a result of unanticipated or unexpected fire development, not the inadequacies of command or even a firefighter’s skills.
So what’s the probl…

One woman was injured in a blaze at Gall Hill, Christ Church, that destroyed one house and damaged another yesterday morning.
Cordella Burgess reportedly sustained burns to her shoulder, back and leg, after the rented two-bedroom house she shared with her sister Carmen and their five children caught fire.
Neighbour Jamar Bayne was one of the first people to offer help to Burgess as she dashed from the house with her clothes on fire.
The next-door house owned by Llewellyn Clarke sustained some…

So as my questions asks, "What is actually in your turnout pockets?" I am a firm believer that every firefighter should be equipped with the basic tools required to start self-preservation/rescue operations when confronted with firefighter entrapment.
Now I am pretty sure folding spanners have a place on the fireground but when was the last time you used one inside a burning building? Besides modern fire apparatus have so many spanners mounted on it, it will make your head spin. So at the start…
