Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...June 17, 2009
Well, I am happy to report I got a 76 on the Fire Officer test. I didn't take the course but just researched a bit. And that gets me a free ice cream from my friend Jim Q.
Funny thing is I got a better grade than when I took FF1
Go figure!

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...June 13, 2009
I can't tell you how I feel when I turn on my laptop in the morning and see a friend's request, or someone sent me a message, through firefighternation.com.
Today is Saturday and I was supposed to back to where I used to live on Eastern Long Island to visit some old friends. Important since I don't have any local friends who I can go to the mall with, or take a walk with, etc. You know - the kind of friends you've had since your kids were little…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...February 19, 2009
A few nights ago I got to try the thermal imaging camera. When you go to the Academy, they mention the camera when you hit the chapter in the book but the only way you get to try certain pieces of equipment is in the firehouse or at a scene. At a scene is not necessarily the best way to learn something but if it's not busy, it's a good way you can pick up some practical knowledge.
I was lucky enough to be with a volunteer who wants to help me…

On this Superbowl Sunday, I’m reminded of
an article I read recently on an NFL production crew directed by Bob Fishman. The article paints an amazing picture of the action that occurs in the production trailer, and how the decisions and actions of one or two people determine what millions are watching on their screens—indeed, their actions determine how those viewers experience the event.
But the article hit home for me on…

I consider myself a student of effective public and media relations. One of the most difficult messages a fire chief or public information officer must convey is that of a tragedy where, despite our best efforts, the results are fatal.
I often coach fire officers and public officials at incident scenes as how to best deliver difficult news. While I encourage them to focus on the role of the rescuers - not the vict…

As I mentioned in a previous blog, you'll notice that all of our press releases end with a common theme: Recruitment.
We pounce at every opportunity to get our recruitment message out to our target audience.
As an effective means of both recruitment and retention, we write a press release to announce new additions to our team every time someone joins our fire company.
Written properly, these types of advertorials can breed real success.
Hopefully, it makes the reader think: "If (insert name…

Even the best of PIOs-Public Information Officers go through a dry spell and struggle for something newsworthy to promote once in a while. Some call it writer's block. Others call it a brain cramp.
It only takes a little imagination (or inspiration) to get put of this slump, even when you don't think you have anything that's of relevance to your target audience: the public.
I half-jokingly say that if someone goes to the bathroom in our firehouse - we write a press release about it.
I get ins…

My daughter Caroline turns four tomorrow. She’s our middle child and some of you know she has
Down syndrome which makes her life a little more interesting than yours and mine. When she was born, we really had no idea what to expect. I knew some friends whose children had DS, but really, other than that, I had no inkling of the potential issues that could possibly be made manifest as a result of this diagnosis.
The short form is, my wife a…

I was thinking the other day after I wrestled with posting my blog that there are probably a dozen guys at work I could call to answer my question as to what was up with my computer. In my frustration, I was thinking, I am pretty competent with a computer for a 44-year old guy who still types with two or three fingers, yet it seems like some of the people I work with run circles around me when it comes to troubleshooting this stuff.
The first computer I was assigned at work was an ancient HP an…
