Brandon Columbia Firefighter's Save Dog

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Fire gutted a home off Two Notch Road in Columbia before the fire department got the fire under control around 4:00pm Friday. It happened on Knightbridge Road, according to Columbia fire officials. Firefighters say no one was home when the fire started, but there was a dog in the house. His little wet nose can breathe fresh air now, but one-year-old Teddy nearly died of smoke inhalation while stuck alone inside the smoke-filled house. Columbia firefighter Blake Harlin sat… Continue

Art "ChiefReason" Goodrich The Adventures of Jake and Vinnie© - Episode #34

Anyone Got a Light? The house at 431 Maple Street died a very quick death. From the time Engine 53 arrived, it only took 12 minutes for the structure to start its collapse into the basement. Jake had seen fast-moving fires, but those were in warehouses and were fueled by wood, paper, mattresses, propane gas and air; lots of air! But he had never seen a residential fire burn so quickly. Man, that friggin’ fire had some energy thought Jake. “Fire spread was supersonic, eh… Continue

Art "ChiefReason" Goodrich The Adventures of Jake and Vinnie© - Episode #33

The Lighter Side of Fire It’s Halloween night in Grandview. The most hallowed of holidays for the unholiest of spirits, ghosts, goblins and purveyors of mayhem. As if Evil needs a reason to strike! Halloween is a night of contrasts. On the one hand, you have the two-year-old dressed up in the little Dalmatian costume, replete with floppy ears, puppy nose and mittens made to resemble paws. Pictures are taken at every house. He’s soooooo cute! Can we keep him? He’s soooooo adContinue

Clay Hood My first fire.

I arrived at the station the morning of October 13, 2009 at 7:30 A.M. It was a rainy day with no signs of slowing. Considering that this was the first big rain of the season I prepared myself for multiple vehicle accidents on Highway 49. At about 8:40 A.M, 40 minutes after crew change, the tone came out. "Station 88 area, structure fire." Immediately my heart jumped, I dropped what i was doing, and sprinted to the engine. My turnouts were on and I was in the engine in warp speed. En route to the… Continue

Art "ChiefReason" Goodrich Are You Nuts?

Important development: Yesterday-September 17th-the U.S. House joined the U.S. Senate in voting to defund ACORN. This will eliminate ALL federal funding to the organization. The question that remains is: will FEMA pull the Fire Prevention and Safety grant that was awarded to ACORN? Blogger's note: I was going to provide the link to FoxNews today (October 7, 2009), but they already have the story up over there. I am hoping Bill O'Reilly or Glenn Beck will mention it on the broadcasts. Continue

Mike Walker Fire Service Leadership - Micro Managing

Micro Managing The dictionary defines Micro Managing as- "To direct or control in a detailed, often meddlesome manner". To me that pretty well sums it up but lets break it down. Being detail oriented is usually not a bad thing as attention to detail sometimes makes a difference between a mediocre situation to an excellent one. Where is the line that denotes how far is too far? Have you ever driven an officer that is constantly telling you "Go left", "Slow down", "speed up",… Continue

Fire Rescue Magazine Study Produces Tips on Communicating with the Public about Wildfire

Straight Talk How to speak to a public that, according to one study, better understands—but still fears—WUI fire By Sandy Shaffer In 2008, the Partners in Fire Education (PIFE) completed an extensive research project that involved collecting the American public’s opinion on fire use and other related topics. Have you ever wondered what John or Jane Q. Public thinks about prescribed burning? Do you think they know (or care) about fire’s historical role in our ecosystems? Do you think, aft… Continue

"The only problem with this job is that there's no place to hide. It's not like having a bad day selling log cabins. You have a bad day here, somebody dies, and that's not f*****g good enough." (Sorry, just had to add that)
