Battling the Hidden Danger
Tactical considerations for firefighting operations in lightweight construction
By James M. Dalton, Peter Van Dorpe, Robert G. Backstrom & Steve Kerber
Multiple firefighter fatalities at large commercial fires attract the attention and scrutiny they warrant. However, it’s also important to remember that many line-of-duty injuries and deaths occur in single- and multiple-family dwellings during routine, “bread and butter” residential fires. A review o…

I went to the barn today to find a neighbor walking pony back from their yard into his paddock. This isn't a surprise... he's kind of a trouble-maker.
On that note: He's very much name-less at the moment. So far I've heard Casper, Jack, Bam bam, and the top contender is Loki (Norsk God of Mischief). But I don't really like either of them. Anyone got any name ideas? Here is the little pain in the butt. He's still young

I was working at Engine 7, located in the oldest working firehouse in San Jose. It was built in the early 1930s as a federal work project. It was a small Spanish-style house with 2 bedrooms, a small galley kitchen, and a living room. The basement had weights and a T.V. but this was before cable. The older firemen working when I came in
went back to WWll and did not watch much T.V. They were great card and cribbage players.
Station 7 had walls about one-foot…

Never too young.........
Friend and local firefighter/emt has had a stroke. He's only in his late thirties, healthy and fit. There's no age limits for health problems. Regular wellness checks are money well spent.

There are some pictures and memories we retain that are so painful we try to block them but they still are there. This morning over breakfast they crept out again. My steel has been tempered in the hottest of furnaces. I have seen death and told families when we could do no more, but the death of children still brings tears to my eyes and a deep pain to my soul.
A good family friend, a young paramedic had a call that involved the death of a baby. I know this will be with her forever. With her,…

February is American Heart Month.
That’s it; one month and the shortest one at that?
How can we expect to maintain a sustained effort to reduce heart-related deaths in the fire service if we only pull out the PR campaign once a year?
Besides; we will forget about it as quickly as we forget all of those New Years’ resolutions. You know the ones; going to lose weight, eat healthier, exercise more and trim your nose hair more often.
Doing what I just mentioned is taking some personal responsibi…
