Why I Joined the Fire/EMS:
kind of an odd story, i worked with a few members over the summer, and they talked very highly of it. then i said to one of them i might be interested in joining. word eventually got back to one of my neighbors who is a ex captain and current warden down there. he caught me off guard and asked me if i was serious about joining. i told him i was then got promptly dragged down to the next company meeting and got started on my paperwork. in the end i'm pretty happy that i got dragged down, because i wouldn't trade it for the world.

Top Issues Facing Responders:
The top issues facing the fire/EMS services today, especially on long island, is the criticism of the media on the local volunteer departments. Media agencies have called for a complete rework of the system, i feel this is the biggest issue facing our vollie departments today, to convince the public that we are good and continue the traditions of our departments while providing fire/ems services to the public.
I Love Being in Fire/EMS Because:
knowing i've helped people at the end of my day

About Me

my name is andrew, but i'm pretty much known by my last name around the firehouse. i've been a member for about a year and a half now and i absolutely love it down there. i'm a member of the hook and ladder, i'm certified in FF1 and currently taking my EMT B class and hope to pass that within a few months so i can start helping get the rescue rig out during the day. i can tell you though that in my short time down there, its already become a big part of my life and i wouldn't trade it for anything.

Useful Probie Rules

Here is a list of a few of the things I learned as a probie in my dept. All you new guys, these are bound to help a little. Enjoy.

Rules Every Probie in a Volunteer Dept Should Know...
You're always the first person you look out for at a scene, your fellow firemen second. (Civilians optional)
You, as a probie, by definition know shit, that is why your shield is a different color, so when an officer looks for someone to do something, you are overlooked, so in your observing role learn as much as… Continue

If we cant be teams of specialists, we may have a real problem being teams. Its tuff to imagine having the luxury of turning specialist away because they have no real interest in becoming everthing to everybody. We need to recognize them and we ev...

Typical bullshit. Pass legislation that properly funds and equips fire departments so the volunteers can concentrate on training and being GOOD firefighters and EMT's, not great chicken flippers, bingo workers and ticket sellers. I hope the future ...
