In Alaska we are allowed to use Blue Lights, but it is left to our departments discretion. At mine, Nikiski Fire, we must be what is known as Stand-by EMS or Stand-by Fire. This means you've gone through a check off that says you are proficient in...

Concusions

Well, yesterday as I was driving home from running a few errands a tone out for a 14 y/o girl who had flipped her ATV came over my pager. I arrived on scene to help inspect her posterior thorax and help backboard. We loaded her and went the hospital. It was the usual, "do you remember what happened that made you lose control of your 4 wheeler?" Pt, "I was on a 4 wheeler?" Medic, "yes, hun, you flipped it and now we're taking you to the hospital." Pt. "I want my mommy!" Medic, "your mom is in the… Continue

ABC's

Last night we had a Charlie response call (second in highest priority responses) for a 41 y/o male with Grande Mal seizure activity. It was unknown how long he had been seizing before the caller found him and he continued to seize from the time of the call until the beginning of transport. I arrived in my POV and walked into the house, my scene size up started when I pulled into the driveway. First question, "Where should I park?" I noticed the ambulance would need to back out so I chose a spot… Continue

First Fire

At 3:20 am August 4th of 2009 a firealarm was sounded over the Nikiski Fire Department radio frequency. It was what we call and Auto Aid from the Kenai Fire Department (when there is a fire in the City of Kenai our department sends our Ladder 1 either to scene or to cover their station, the same deal is contracted with their Engine 3). I hopped on board thinking, "Here's another few hours of rehab," because I have not completed the Fire Fighter 1 Academy and am still technically a medical only p… Continue

Hey there! I just wanted to stop by and see how things were going? And be the first one to say Welcome to September! Where did the summer go? I am getting knee deep into my EMT class now. So we will see how it goes. Any Termination dust yet? Stay Safe

Hey there! Just dropped by to say hello. Not too much going on here. We have our annual open house and company inspection today. This past week we had a 2 story frying pan fire. Kept is confined to the kitchen and the stove. But it was a hot hot and humid night nonetheless. Stay Safe.

So one of my LT's is headed up to Anchorage and to the Kenai Pennisula for a vacation in a couple of weeks. Anything going on in Homer?

Just remeber there is no such thing as a rekindle. It means you didn't do you job right the first time! If the Doc's chew you out tell them to join you at 2:00am and then they can write their own paper work. That's usually stops them in ther tracks.

You are right Safety is no accident. I was just talking with a friend of mine who is an EMT up in Anchorage at UAA. So today must be my Alaska day. I do miss it up there, especially this time of year. So how was your first structure fire? Any Ah Ha! moments for you? I know that there was for me during my first one.
