Founded by a third-generation firefighter, Black Helmet Apparel is the future of firefighter casual wear. High quality men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing with modern designs that relay the fearless, but frightening side of our job.

I like the "brick wall" analogy. Many things are required to build the "strong" leader, and it must be maintained. A building left alone, without maintenance or upgrades, begins to crumble over time. For me, an important element in those building...

Share your memories of Jim Page

Today (Friday, Sept. 4) marks the 5th anniversary of the sudden death of Chief Jim Page.

Since joining FireRescue magazine, one of my biggest regrets is that I never met Jim, our founder and the vision behind FireRescue and JEMS. Many of my colleagues worked with him for years. The inspirati… Continue

In Defense of Tradition

On Saturday I spent a few hours at the Fire Expo here in San Diego. Organized by the Burn Institute each year, the Expo combines firefighting demonstrations with safety messages to educate kids about fire safety and raise money for the Burn Institute’s programs that benefit children with burn injuries.… Continue

H1N1: Do you have the facts?

Although the media hype has died down, “swine flu” remains a reality that all first responders must be ready to confront. The World Health Organization just raised H1N1 to a Stage-6 pandemic, reflecting the spread of the disease if not the intensity; many experts predict a second wave that could be significantly more intense than the first. Europe has confirmed its first death, and closer to home, 36 students and their seven chaperones from a San Diego-area high school remain quarantined in Chin… Continue

Why Cut AFG? DHS Secretary weighs in

In a previous post, I noted that IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger hinted at increased funding to come for the fire service.

Unfortunately, last week the administration actually proposed reducing the AFG program by 70 percent. Although this was "offset" by significant increases in the SAFER grant, it was hardly sounded like the increase in funding Schaitberger promised--overall, as… Continue

Hazmat gets a little more comfortable

You might not like it, but fire service responsibility for hazmat is here to stay. And as more firefighters become certified to NFPA 472 Operations as a minimum training competency level for hazmat incidents, there’s growing need to have chemical and hazmat personal protective clothing (PPC) that allows firefighters to actually move and work with less restriction.

Conventional chemical PPC are often heavy and cumbersome, “moonsuits” that, while designed for maximum protection of the user, impos… Continue

My name is Adel and I am trying to figure out what products are best for female firefighters. I have worked as a firefighter for only three years so I am just getting started. Currently I am a student at Eastern algerinne University in in the Fire & Safety Engineering Technology Program. Although I have only been a firefighter for three years I have had my fair share of small gloves that were still too big and pants that went up to my belly button! I was wondering if you could take the time out of your busy schedule to share some of your favorite/best fitting/most functional products for female firefighters. Weather it’s an awesome fitting pair of pants, A polo shirt that has sleeves that do not go down to your elbows, a pair of great gloves, or boots that have an awesome fit. It would be greatly appreciated if you could share your opinions with me. Thank you very much. Please feel free to e-mail me back at adel_pomper@hotmail.com or leave me a commentDelete Comment

Thanks for the comment! :)

I wrote that accountability piece and posted it, and within an hour or so got two messages from other members saying, "Great post! - Goes right along with Art Goodrich's post a few days ago and the article about the Safety Week theme from WebChief."...neither of which I had seen yet.

I felt a little silly when I read them - I just inadvertently repeated what everyone else said. Oh, well... :)
