Top Issues Facing Responders:
Retention of qualified Fire Fighters. We are a small rural community with less than 400 residents total. For the past several years the population has decreased from almost 600 due to the lack of jobs(mostly farming) and they havemovedto the cities where the jobs, schools, and entertainment possibilities are greater. If we can get 1 or 2 recruits per year we consider ourselves lucky. Then if we can get them trained and keep them for a couple of years it's a bonus. We have had a total of 30 members since we started and now we have 15 on the roster with only 9 of us certified. Most of the new people that sign up see us having a good time at our many yearly fund raiser functions and they want to be a part of the excitement. So they join up, then when they realize the training schedule we require all of a sudden it's not as much fun as they once thought it was. So we lose 1 or 2 recruits but remember that was all we started with. So the brunt of the work falls on the 6 or 8 dedicated volunteers we have. They are a Godsend to this community, we not only fight fires and rescue people,we assist neighbors however they need us. We visit,we mow yards,we work on appliances, and we patch up lives.
I Love Being in Fire/EMS Because:
The look on my neighbors faces as we arrive to assist them

welcome to FFN. I understand the recruiting issue as we face the same issues in our department. The amount of calls is staggering for our volunteers. You are welcome to add me as a friend.

This isn't very surprising. Appalling, for sure; but not surprising. Our department also has its books reviewed and tax statements prepared by an independent CPA firm. All financial records are on computer and backed up. We have an audit committe...

My thoughts exactly.

Rusty, knowing what to care about is something everyone should be doing out there. It has nothing to do with being an officer or a chief. That being said I'm happy being a hose monkey. Besides, my people skills suck.
