My Training:
I've got the all of the typical training and certs that go along with 29 years in the fire service. It's boring.
About Me:
I have been a Fireman (Captain II) with the Arlington, VA Fire Department since 1984 and still look forward to going to work everyday. Not many people can say that about their jobs! I am also a Fireman (Assistant Fire Chief) with the Manassas Volunteer Fire Company for 7 years. The best part of being a fireman is hanging out around the kitchen table with your buddies telling war stories, bitching about everything and joking with each other relentlessly. It's a great time and you can't beat it!

Most mornings you can find me at Panera Bread eating a bagel and sipping a cup of Hazelnut coffee while I read the newspaper.

After recently totaling my Explorer in an accident I am lucky to be alive and walking. I have always heard people say that your life can change in an instant. I didn't really listen because I knew it didn't pertain to me. How wrong I was! I ALWAYS felt invincible beind the wheel of a car and just knew I would NEVER be the one to get hurt badly in a car accident. Well, I am here to tell you that life DOES change in an instant. It is a humbling experience when the Spider Straps are being put on you! I have been off work since July 27th, 2008. If all goes well I should be back to full-duty by mid-October. I can't wait!!!! Broken necks suck and I don't wish it upon anyone.

I am thankful for my friends who have been there when I needed them and accept me for who I am.

I enjoy classic cars and trucks, especially Mustangs and antique trucks. I own a 1967 Ford fire truck, a 1967 Mustang and a 1989 Mustang GT convertible.

I enjoy going to the movies, watching TV in bed, reading the many magazines I subscribe to, surfing the internet, riding my bike, restoring my 1967 Mustang, hanging out with friends, going out to eat, meeting new people and spending time with my sons. I enjoy throwing back a few Miller Lites although I am not into the "bar scene." I do enjoy going out with friends and have a good time and just hanging out in general.
Side Jobs or Other Organizations:
I am the owner of my own screen printing business, Higgins Custom T's. I specialize in designs for the fire service but do whatever work comes in the door. I can make shirts for your department, your kids soccer team or any other event. Check out my website at www.higginsct.com
Personal Site/Profile:

Top Issues Facing Responders:
Politicians, Pay and benefits, adequate staffing levels, adequate training, promoting unqualified people to supervisory roles, retention of EMS folks.........
I Love Being in Fire/EMS Because:
Is there anything else????

I was just down your way last week. I came down for the Steelers-Redskins MNF game, and then hung out around DC for the election. Pretty wild times. I was hoping to catch up to Ben O- but he was back here for his brother's wedding. Such is life. Hope it is treating you well.

Hi Randy, I was wondering if you could help me with obtaining a Clarendon patch for our display board. I sent a letter to your dept. and also talked to a Norman Lopez about getting a patch.
I have not heard from anyone as to the status of obtaining a patch.
I am in the process of making a display board with all the Clarendon FD's patches in the nation.
Please let me know if you can help. Stay safe. Norm

Hi Shaun: I lean towards the last name on helmet, but agree that it stinks that AFTER your effort the department changes it's formal mind. Speaking of using nicknames between ourselves, I never appreciated the impact when I would have "Killer" g...
