Great job, Ted. Great story and well told as usual. Q: Why didn't you take the sandwich along? A: Because it wasn't a "hero" sandwich

They may have gotten new helmets and the camper/blower rig was designed to give their helmets "the look"... kind of like toasting marshmallows but on a larger scale.

Those 8 tools can get tucked into the helmet band, so you still have the coat pockets. And don't forget about the inner pocket.

Hey, look - we've talked the chief into TWO items. How about our dress/station pants belt - Leatherman tool? :o) All right, all right - I'll take a tool like the one Oldman has pictured.

John Norman mentions this in "Fire Officer's Handbook of Tactics" - lines should be stretched dry if possible, to a safe area nearest the fire. In other words, just as Jack described. The reason is that a dry line weighs about half as much as a ch...

Back to the Earth

I have not been active on FFN for a while, and for good reason. A discipline problem has made 2009 pretty stressful at times. Due to ongoing legal issues there’s not much more I can say about it now, however the story will be told in a future blog. I will say that as 1st Assistant Chief I have tried to shoulder some of the load borne by the Chief, and help resolve the problem.

But I digress.

My wife and I have taken up gardening, and we are on our second year of tending a modest patch of land… Continue

Memorial Day 2009

On Memorial Day we should - and most do - remember and honor those who have given their lives for this great country. We should also remember and thank those who have served our country in wartime or in peace. There are several men that I remember quite often, and not just once a year. I certainly don’t need a reminder from anyone to recall them to my memory. Let me tell you about them.

My great-great grandfather, Ira S. Thurber, was a Lieutenant in the 64th Regiment, New York State Volunteers.… Continue

For the Old Timers: Colonoscopy Awaits You

A while back, Chief Billy Goldfeder wrote a little story in The Secret List urging everyone over 50 to schedule a colonoscopy. He didn’t need to convince me; after my father died of cancer in 2005, I went to the doctor and scheduled a complete physical examination. Doc suggested that I have a colonoscopy, so I resigned myself to the medical profession for the procedure.

I don’t recall that Chief Billy went into details about his experience, so I thought I would share mine for all of you 50+ yea… Continue

Hurricane Hazel, October 1954

On the afternoon of October 5, 1954, hurricane hunter planes found the eye of Hurricane Hazel about 50 miles east of the island of Grenada. The eye was poorly defined, but its highest winds were already near 100 mph. It was the beginning of a storm that was to spread death and destruction from the Caribbean up through the Carolinas, the middle of the Atlantic states and into Canada.

By 11:00 a.m. on October 14, Hazel reached North Carolina, its winds sustained at 150 mph. It was preceded by a s… Continue

Hey Joe - Speaking of volunteers, how many volunteer firefighters does it take to change a lightbulb?

A: Two - one to change the lightbulb, and one to hold his beer.

You are totally right the fire ground is not the correct to address anything. I was looking for feed back on what others would think. I would go through proper channels. My concern is firefighter safety, if I see something wrong I wonder if they know the facts. I think you for your input and be safe out there.

Joe, Its that time here also everyone burning off brush&leaves 4 brush fires this week. Keeping our brush trucks up is difficult, cannt be afraid to use them for what they are. I still hate scratches on our equiptment. Lay of land here is much like Ithaca/ Finger Lakes area, we work 4x4s and skid units hard. Often use Dept of Forestry CAT Dozer to cut fire breaks. Told the boys recently (when they were crying about cold,26 degrees) about hitting a hydrant one January evening in 1991 at -20 degrees and having to tow 2 300ft sections of 5" back to the station frozen. I dont miss that part of upstate NY. PlaySafe=)

Joe,

Sorry if this seems rude,I'm new to this site. I saw in a post that you responded you knew how to open up the Minitor IV pagers. I'd like to know how to open them up as we have several that are broken but have good cases that I could use on others. I don't know how to send you a private message, still learning about this site. If you can tell me how I can contact you I will give it a try.

Thanks,
