Hey guys, here's another idea for those who use Facebook----create a Page for your department. Here's one for my department that I manage: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=52202806&v=info&ref=profile#/pages/Shaft-Fire-Department/102005847777...

yes we are just embarking on such initiatives and will soon stream some video clips on our website. There is so much work to be done in building the interest and confidence of diversity groups to choose and seek firefighting as a career

I would imagine such a strategy would include a marketing plan that would show that women and other minority groups can and are accepted in the fire service. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5Hu6x5qsNs

I am interested in learning from fire departments that successfully implemented recruitment strategies to attract and retain under-represented groups such as women and people form non-English speaking backgrounds.

Biggest hints is to get all required paperwork in ahead of time. There has been plenty of times we wanted to hire somebody but couldn't because they lacked certain paperwork. Things not required but look good. Reference letters from figure heads (current Chief, local government offiicals, etc..)
