Kim, Would like to let you know that in my dept and company that it is always the rookie's job to do the cleaning. And all rookies do it male and female alike. It is merely a tradition. When the new rookie comes you will no longer be the rookie an...

I am now a Captain after only 8 years in my department which is almost unheard of so I face a lot of discriminatory things as well. I usually make my probies do the "grunt" work such as if there is a function to where citizens will be in and out o...

I, luckily, have not had problems with being female in my volunteer department. Sure, the guys tease me sometimes about being a girl, but I tease them right back. It's never been cruel or unfair humor, just that which comes with the job. I think p...

I'm a female rookie on duty right now, and I can tell you that unless NOONE is lifting ANY finger to help with ANYTHING, that it is normal. Expect to clean anything and everything, and keep a "can-do" attitude. You will get subtlely "tested" on th...

Well, it's been an interesting 6 months, I can tell you that much. Now I know it's because I'm female. I'm being passed up for training and classes, I'm being passed up for gear and a radio. It's all going to the new male rookies. At first I thoug...

I have to say it's probably a little of both. Rookies get all the crap work to start with and of course, guys give girls crap anyway. It's one of the perks. Me ,personally, it makes down time fun. I can give just as good as they can. But once you ...

Hey!

My name is Amanda and I am trying to figure out what products are best for female firefighters. I have worked as a firefighter for only three years so I am just getting started. Currently I am a student at Eastern Kentucky University in in the Fire & Safety Engineering Technology Program. Although I have only been a firefighter for three years I have had my fair share of small gloves that were still too big and pants that went up to my belly button! I was wondering if you could take the time out of your busy schedule to share some of your favorite/best fitting/most functional products for female firefighters. Weather it’s an awesome fitting pair of pants, A polo shirt that has sleeves that do not go down to your elbows, a pair of great gloves, or boots that have an awesome fit. It would be greatly appreciated if you could share your opinions with me. Thank you very much. Please feel free to e-mail me back at amanda_cherry4@eku.edu or leave me a comment.

Stay Safe,
Amanda Cherry

Ron - Agreed - working in an area with many teaching hospitals we often get well meaning medical folks eager to help or to try their new skills on the street. We inform them if they want to take charge of the scene they must accompany the patient...
