I was hired in Quincy Florida as their first female firefighter in 1998. At the time I was in the AirForce reserves and was activated after 911. I ended up in Fort Walton Beach Florida after my activation and started fightingfire at Ocean City-Wright fire dept. in 2003. Then in 2005 I was deployed to Iraq with my reserve unit for 4 months. When I returned there was an opening for a LT. position in the Fire Prevention dept. So I proceeded to get my inspectors certification and got the job. 2 years later an opening for a new Fire Marshal came at SouthWalton FD. I applied for it and suprisingly they hired me, but changed the position title to Life Safety Coordinator and lowered the pay?!! Well 16 months later after making my mark in SWFD .I was just hired to be Fire Marshal in Fort Walton Beach, Fl. I start 01/05/09. Hopefully FWBFD will be my home from now on.

Hey!

My name is Amanda and I am trying to figure out what products are best for female firefighters. I have worked as a firefighter for only three years so I am just getting started. Currently I am a student at Eastern Kentucky University in in the Fire & Safety Engineering Technology Program. Although I have only been a firefighter for three years I have had my fair share of small gloves that were still too big and pants that went up to my belly button! I was wondering if you could take the time out of your busy schedule to share some of your favorite/best fitting/most functional products for female firefighters. Weather it’s an awesome fitting pair of pants, A polo shirt that has sleeves that do not go down to your elbows, a pair of great gloves, or boots that have an awesome fit. It would be greatly appreciated if you could share your opinions with me. Thank you very much. Please feel free to e-mail me back at amanda_cherry4@eku.edu or leave me a comment.

Stay Safe,
Amanda Cherry

Ron - Agreed - working in an area with many teaching hospitals we often get well meaning medical folks eager to help or to try their new skills on the street. We inform them if they want to take charge of the scene they must accompany the patient...
