Alan, the problem didn't lie with the senior member, he used his expeience and made the right call and was looking out for his little brother. It goes back to what I said about being patient with the new fire fighters and knowing that you might up...

The flip side of not letting new members use their training may be the need to protect them somewhat. We had an incident a few years back that lead to allot of bad blood. We had a newer member who started palling around with one group of members m...

Dustin, I don't mind if you print this blog, but I don't know if you should just "hang it up", you might want to try giving it to the officers when you talk with them privately.

Nope, I am not. The members I am concerned about (the young guys not being able to do anything) are all still probies. If John doesn't mind, I would like to print this blog and just hang it up on the wall for a few days, have some of the officers ...

John, I wish some of my officers would read this post. I've been in the fire service for a little over two years now. I've been in fires, cut up cars, seen my share of nasty med calls. I dont really want to question the thinking of my officers but...

Safety is number one and I agree. They are also doing the same with donning your bunker gear with in 1 min. I would rather dock points to ensure that it is done properly than to fail a good person that took 5 extra seconds. Why do that to someone ...

Passing on our experience.

Some of you may remember my blog about not knowing when I became the one that the new kids looked to for answers to their questions about fire fighting, but that over the years I had gone from being the one asking all the questions to the one being asked. It was recently brought home to me that I am the one with the experience, when in a class we were asked to give our names and how long ago we started in the fire service. When it was my turn I gave my name and when I said I started in 1982, one… Continue

Fire vs Police

With the recent events with the state troopers and emts, it got me to thinking about how often we in the fire service make jokes at the expense of law enforcement. How many of have heard of using the" cop o' meter"to check for haz-mat, or one of the many jokes about fire fighters being better than police officers? I have been on both sides of the issue, I am a retired law enforcement officer, and I can see both sides. We need to stop setting ourselves apart and start trying to remove the walls t… Continue

When did it happen.........

I turned 45 this year and I got to wondering, when did I go from being the young eager kid who wanted to know everything I could about fire and rescue work, to the one that the young kids look to for answers to their questions. I don't really recall a point where I knew that I was no longer the young wide eyed kid, it just happened gradualy. I started learning more and eventualy there was someone asking me the same questions that I had asked. I went through FFI and FFII, the haz-mat, and driving… Continue

Welcome to the family where the language and reasoning important the Border is not in our work is to save lives regardless of color, religion or social position, much less. The important thing in our work does not need language to communicate, or borders to help.
Greetings from Mexico.
you’re new friend Filiberto.
