First picture, in addition to the SCBA, the nozzleman doesn'thave his helmet flaps pulled down (at least it doesn't look like it). Without seeing the whole scene I'm not sure why he is spraying where he is instead of at the base of the fire. I ass...

I just spoke to my wife and she hasn't heard anything about this. As an Avon Representative she said she gets 20% of the sale for her commission. Avon does have a program where you can do fundraisers. We have done a few for our fire department ove...

As one who has had the honor to be an escort, I thought it was an excellent movie. However, because I have been there, I cannot watch it again.

I've watched this movie a dozen times and each and every time it brings a tear to my eye. If you haven't seen the movie "Taking Chance" I urge you to do so. With Veterans day around the corner this is a sobering reminder of the sacrifices that ou...

The Forgotten Victims

We have all been on these calls before. 67 yr old grandmother fell and broke her hip in the kitchen. 38 yr old father fell from the roof shingling the garage. 28 yr old female 7 months pregnant experiencing severe cramping and pain.

It doesn’t matter the gender, age, race or religion. We rush to the scene to render the best aid we can give to the patient. Our crew will rush into the house. Lights and sirens blaring. We jump out of our rigs grabbing medic bags, backboards, Oxygen tanks, cots and… Continue

Be prepared for heat emergencies

with temperatures topping 90-95% in Indiana I have noticed that the run volume has increased dramatically for heat related emergencies. As firefighters we need to take extra precautions during extremely hot days so that we don't become a victem ourselves.

Take some preventative measures and make sure that you stay well hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

On scene make sure you check the tough guy attitude and visit rehab frequently. I've seen many guys think that they are too m… Continue

I shed a tear today . . .

I shed a tear today in front of my kids. I was not ashamed nor did I try to hid it. At noon I took my 7 yr old twins and 3 year old to the court house square. We stopped at each white cross displayed in perfect symetry in front of our majestic 1878 court house. We passed at each cross as i read the name of the soldier who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

I paused longer at the name of a marine who I went to high school with. We knelt in front of his cross as I said a prayer. At that mom… Continue

Finished Teaching FFI/II - Reflections

In January I started teaching my first Firefighter I/II course. Last week was the last official night of class and I have a couple review nights scheduled this week before they take the state exam. I hope that this has been a good experience for those in my class and that they have learned the essentials needed to do the job safely.

I learned alot during the past 4 months. First is that no matter how much experience we have we can always learn something. Going through the course I realized that… Continue

Training night tonight - Bloodborne Pathogens

Tonight I will be presenting a refresher course on bloodborne pathogens. We all know and preach BSI, scene safe, universal precautions when we do training or during skills days but do we really practice it out in the streets?

I've been reflecting back over the last couple years and am reluctant to admit that we (myself included) sometimes get lax out on the scene.

It is scary to think about what all you can catch from someone through blood or bodily fluids. We like to think that we are invinsi… Continue

Thanks for your recent kind words, it's all about giving back. The importance of that becomes more clear and evident as we grow older and see things "differently" through our years of experience and survival...stay safe..

Captain, I like reading up on you. Your motives and drive are an inspiration. I plug in "Thoughts for the day." all the time and just came accross these two. They sure apply to our Fire Service. "Most people dont leave their jobs due to lack of money. They leave because they dont feel appreciated." and "It is the presence of HOPE, not challenge, that generates capabilities and the desire to succeed". Keep up the good work. MPAWY.

I've been on a volunteer roster for alittle over 2 years now. Was going thru the paramedic program shortly after I was accepted as a member. That was too time consuming to try to tackle FF I at same time. Not to mention I had to put paramedic on hold at the request of the government, for a second tour to Iraq. I will be leaving here in about a week and hope to pick back up with my training when I get home. Any pointers on what to study up on before tackling FF I?

Hey Capt. I noticed today on the game forums I seem to always follow your reply, so I thought I'd take a look at your page. Impressive photos. Congrats on the completion of teaching your first FF I/II course. Take care and stay safe.
