- When I was a young kid, still in the single digits, I met a volunteer firefighter. I asked him, "Have you ever saved anyone?" He smiled at me and said, "Yep." The pride I saw in his eyes just wowed me. I knew then that I would be a firefighter one day. In 2002, that firefighter was killed in the line of duty. I was still in high school so I joined the department as a junior firefighter just a few months after his death. I joined the fire department in memory of my fallen brother, to help my community, and because I wanted to be as proud of my job as that firefighter was. One thing I can truly say, is that I am.

- I love to hunt and fish. Especially fly fishing. I'm a pretty avid Ohio State Football fan as well as Marshall University out of West Virginia. I show cutting horses and enjoy working for a horse trainer in northern Ohio. I have always enjoyed writing stories and firefighter poetry. I am a big supporter of the Everyone Goes Home program and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Firefighter safety is number one in my book. I hate to see a brother or sister's name added to the memorial in Emmitsburg.

Remembering Firefighter Dusty Schwendeman 1975-2002
In Loving Memory of...
Dustin Michael Schwendeman
May 1, 1975 - January 22, 2002
Your memory has stood the test of time,
like a song with no reason or rhyme,
time has passed and years gone by,
since you were called to God on high.
Seven years has never seemed so small,
almost as if no time has gone by at all,
change has touched everything since you've been gone,
though some things remain untouched no matter how long.
I could never have imagined this day,
unable to conceive of a life with you gone that way,
Now, here we remain, trying to reform our lives,
working to remember the good memories of while you were still alive.
I never thought it would last this long,
keeping your memories right where they now belong,
the thought of you crossing my mind for 365 days for 7 years,
sometimes bringing laughter and smiles and sometimes tears.
I made a promise to you when you left,
because as firefighters we never forget the best,
to love and remember you from that moment on,
a promise which will last no matter how long you're gone.
Dusty loved working with children and horses. He joined the two together when he opened up his own horse training facility at the age of 18. There, he gave lessons to children showing in 4-H and helped them to get their start in the world of showing in the horse industry.
Dusty always had the biggest smile on his face and the bluest eyes you would ever see. His face would light up any time a child walked into the room. He loved his parents dearly and was looking forward to starting a life with his loving fiancé. Once you met Dusty, you would never forget him. He left a mark on everyone he came into contact with. He could light up a room on a cloudy day.
Things changed on January 21, 2002. Dusty was called out to a structure fire with reported "people entrapped". While responding to the station in his POV, Dusty topped a hill and came into contact with black ice. Losing control of his SUV, the vehicle rolled several times. Dusty was ejected during one of the roll overs and was found approximately 47 feet from where his vehicle had come to rest. Dusty fought a valiant fight through the night, but lost the battle with his injuries at 8:32 a.m. the following morning.
Dusty left behind his fiancé, his parents, friends, and many children who idolized and loved him.
In memory of Dusty and in support of those who are forced to live without him, Please Wear Your Seatbelt! It is one of the simplest things we can do as firefighters, but one of the most likely things which will save our lives. Don't do it for yourself . . .Please do it for your family. . .

2008 Memorial Weekend
I just returned from the 2008 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Every year we are reminded of what can happen and what does happen in the fire service. Ohio Fallen Firefighter Memorial
One of my brothers in the fire service has been very instrumental in developing a memorial for fallen Ohio Firefighters. The Miami Valley Firefighters Memorial is based out of the Dayton, Ohio area. My name is Amanda and I am trying to figure out what products are best for female firefighters. I have worked as a firefighter for only two years so I am just getting started. Currently I am a student at Eastern Kentucky University in in the Fire & Safety Engineering Technology Program. Although I have only been a firefighter for two years I have had my fair share of small gloves that were still too big and pants that went up to my belly button! I was wondering if you could take the time out of your busy schedule to share some of your favorite/best fitting/most functional products for female firefighters. Weather it’s an awesome fitting pair of pants, A polo shirt that has sleeves that do not go down to your elbows, a pair of great gloves, or boots that have an awesome fit.
